Britain Bans Nike's Twitter Campaign for Euro 2012

English footballers breaking rules? Blimey! The U.K. advertising watchdog?must be a Scot, it's so nippy and feisty!?has banned a Nike Twitter campaign after ruling that tweets sent from the personal accounts of soccer stars Wayne Rooney and Jack Wilshere were not clearly labeled as advertising. Nike begged to differ, noting that the #MakeItCount hashtag and a corporate URL appeared in the tweets. The watchdog wasn't inclined to throw the company a bone: "We considered there was nothing obvious in the tweets to indicate they were Nike marketing communications." This marks the first time the Advertising Standards Authority had banned a Twitter campaign. From Nike's point of view, the dogfight's already yielded enough global publicity to ensure that the effort exceeds its #gooooooooaaaaal!

Will Microsoft Buy Nokia?

Microsoft held a one-day event Wednesday for developers who want to learn more about Windows Phone 8. This will be the first Microsoft smartphone platform based on Microsoft Windows instead of Windows CE. It is a last-ditch, all-or-nothing effort for both Microsoft and Nokia to get back into the smartphone game. I think we saw enough clues during the event and in related official blog posts to say with some certainty that Microsoft soon will announce it is buying Nokia.

Here's my guess: Microsoft will announce it has bought Nokia--or at least the part that makes phones and developers' mobile software--before the end of 2012, maybe around the time Apple is likely to announce an iPhone 5.

Bullying of teachers more damaging in online era

MIAMI (AP) ? The bullying that bus monitor Karen Klein endured on a ride home from an upstate New York school was painful and egregious, but also shows how student harassment of teachers and administrators has become more spiteful and damaging in the online era.

Much attention has been paid to students who bully students in class, after school and on the Internet. Less has been given to equally disturbing behavior by students who harass instructors, principals and other adults.

It's something that's long existed; think ganging up on the substitute teacher. But it has become increasingly cruel and even dangerous as students get access to advanced technology at earlier ages.

In Maryland, students posed as their vice principal's twin 9-year-old daughters on pedophile websites, saying they had been having sex with their father and were looking for a new partner. Elsewhere, students have logged on to neo-Nazi and white supremacist sites claiming to be a Jewish or minority teacher and inciting the groups' anger. Others have stolen photographs from teachers' cellphones and posted them online.

"The ways they provoke teachers are limited only by their imaginations," said lawyer Parry Aftab, who described the above cases as just a few of the hundreds she's handled.

Compared with those, what happened to Klein in Greece, N.Y., a suburb of Rochester, was mild, Aftab said.

Students poked the bus monitor with a textbook, called her a barrage of obscenities and threatened to urinate on her front door, among other callous insults. One student taunted: "You don't have a family because they all killed themselves because they don't want to be near you."

Klein's oldest son killed himself 10 years ago.

Eventually, she appears to break down in tears. A cellphone video of the incident posted on YouTube went viral.

There is no data collected on how often students bully and harass teachers and other school authorities.

The most recent school safety report from the National Center for Education Statistics, the data branch of the U.S. Department of Education, found that 5 percent of public schools reported students verbally abused teachers on a daily or weekly basis. Also, 8 percent of secondary school teachers reported being threatened with injury by a student, as did 7 percent of elementary teachers.

"Is what we saw in this video occurring with many children every day with adults? No," said Ken Trump, president of the National School Safety and Security Services, a Cleveland-based consulting firm. "One incident is one too many, but we certainly have a problem where the authority of educators and school support personnel has been undermined."

Certainly, students harassing teachers isn't new.

John Ristow remembers an incident from his early days as a teacher's assistant in Alpena, Mich. A student in the class was upset that he was singled out by the lead teacher for disrupting other students who were trying to study. When Ristow passed him in the hall later that day, the middle school student lashed out.

"It was very nasty swear words that were extremely demeaning to my character," said Ristow, who now is head of communications for the Broward Teachers Union in Florida.

Ristow held out his hand and said, "Stop."

A security officer came by and asked if Ristow wanted her to take the boy to the principal's office. He said no, deciding to resolve the issue directly with the teacher and student instead. He brought both of them together, they discussed how inappropriate the behavior was and told the student he would face a suspension if it happened again.

"It never happened again," Ristow said.

That was in the late 1980s.

Two decades later, students are equipped with cellphones with video cameras and a plethora of apps that allow them easily to share information among each other and post online.

One of the new ways that students are harassing teachers has become known as "cyberbaiting." Students irritate a teacher to the point that the teacher breaks down; that reaction then is captured in photos or video to post online. A Norton Online Family Report published last year found that 21 percent of teachers had experienced or knew another teacher who had experienced "cyberbaiting."

Then there are cases of students who have created websites and blogs against teachers and administrators.

In South Florida, one student created a Facebook group page called, "Ms. Sarah Phelps is the worst teacher I've ever met!" The student encouraged others to "express your feelings of hatred."

The student, Katherine Evans, took the page down but was suspended for three days and removed from her Advanced Placement classes. She later was represented by the American Civil Liberties Union in a lawsuit against the principal of the Pembroke Pines Charter High School, arguing that her right to freedom of speech had been violated. She settled for $15,000 to cover her legal fees and her suspension was wiped from her record.

Aftab said such an outcome is not uncommon. Unless the incident occurs on school grounds, during school hours, at a school sponsored event or on school equipment, the district generally does not have jurisdiction to expel or suspend a student, although some courts around the country have ruled differently.

Courts "tend to side more with the students unless you can show dramatic problems," Aftab said.

Phelps, in her first public comments since the 2007 incident, said while kids make mistakes, it's the responsibility of adults to turn them into teachable moments.

"We need to redefine and expand our definitions of bullying, particularly techno-spread bullying devoid of personal accountability and disseminated under the guise of free speech," Phelps said in a written statement Friday.

District administrators in New York plan to pursue disciplinary actions against all four students who taunted Klein, though police say she does not want them to face criminal charges, partially because of the onslaught of public criticism and even threats they've endured since the video went online.

A fund started for Klein has raised more than $500,000.

School safety experts and administrators say they hope the incident will encourage parents to sit down and speak with their children about the damaging effects of all bullying, and that school officials will reinforce bullying prevention, not just among students, but also aimed at teachers and adults.

"The schools can have consequences," Trump said, pointing to counseling and disciplinary action. The bigger question, he said, is why a student would treat a bus monitor in a way they would not treat their own grandmother. "And that goes far beyond what a school can deal with."

Gay pride rally in Greece is attacked

(AP) ? Police say about 50 people threw eggs and plastic bottles of water at about 400 people holding a gay pride parade in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki.

Police moved in to restrict the attackers on Saturday, but no injuries were reported.

In recent days, Anthimos, the senior Greek Orthodox cleric in Thessaloniki, had publicly criticized the planned gay pride parade. Anthimos, who only uses one name, is known for outspoken speeches on social and political issues.

An annual gay pride rally is annually held in Athens, the Greek capital, and normally occurs without incident.

How to own the phone interview | USA TODAY College

By Ashley Ritter

An interview is an interview, no matter how it?s conducted.

You finally landed an interview with the company of your dreams. The only catch is the interview will be done over the phone, which will likely decide if you will be asked to come in to meet the company in-person.

Phone interviews sound simple. You don?t have to put on your best business attire and you don?t even have to move from your own bedroom, but they take just as much preparation as in-person interviews.

Follow these tips to own your phone interview and succeed in the companies? interview process.

BEFORE

1. Do your research

Research the company. Look at their company website ? do they have a Twitter or LinkedIn page you can follow? You?ll be able to use something you may have seen online in your phone conversation. Also research typical interview questions.

It?s a good idea to have already thought about your responses to these kinds of questions so you aren?t making the interviewer wait too long for your answers.

2. Pick a quiet location

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you?d be surprised at how much noise an air conditioning unit can make in the living room. I?d suggest a place with little-to-no noise at all, such as your bedroom or your silent patio.

By having a location already in mind when the interviewer calls you, you won?t be stuck running around your apartment last minute trying to kick your roommates out of the common areas.

3. Practice

Have someone you trust have a mock interview with you over the phone. This will give you the opportunity to practice the answers to your researched typical interview questions.

If possible, record your practice trial-runs and you will be able to see just how long that awkward pause was or how you say ?uh? before every response.

By having a person you can trust help you, they will offer you constructive advice on how you really sound while on the phone.

DURING

4. Take your time

Don?t think that as soon as an interviewer asks you a question, you have to dispatch the first thing that pops into your head. It?s okay to take a few seconds before each response to gather your thoughts.

The interviewer would rather you talk slower, clearer and more precise than rush to come up with an incomplete or jumbled answer. Even if you immediately know the answer, take a moment to group your thoughts together before having a word vomit that you?ll have to clean up later.

5. Smile

A phone interviewer will notice a change in your tone of voice and you can do this by smiling while you talk. Smiling will express positivity and confidence, even if the employer can?t see your face.

Don?t smile the entire time or you may come across as fake or insincere, but definitely smile if you are talking about your awesome summer spent volunteering or why you?re the best candidate for the job.

6. Use your sources

One of the great things about phone interviews is the employer can?t see what you are doing. You should have a copy of your resume and cover letter nearby so you can refer to it at any point during the interview.

You should also have your computer around so you can have their company website up and reference back to it when asked about how you?d be a good fit for them. Also, don?t forget about the phone?s mute button.

If you have a coughing attack, or just can?t wait to use the bathroom, use the mute button for a few seconds until you?re done?then don?t forget to un-mute yourself!

AFTER

7. Follow up

Just because this wasn?t an in-person interview, doesn?t mean you should not send a formal thank-you note. The note should be short and concise, restating your interest in the position.

And remember, an interview is an interview, no matter how it?s conducted.

What Siri Says About Improving Your Relationship | World of ...

What Siri Says About Improving Your RelationshipWhen I upgraded to an iPhone 4s I had no idea what to expect from Siri, or how she would actually help manage my busy life.

Over the past couple of months I?ve grown to appreciate Siri?s suggestions, assistance, and dry sense of humor. While she occasionally misunderstanding my requests, I can?t fault her entirely. I have to take responsibility for my part in our communication breakdowns. So, I?m working on clear diction and stating my requests more concisely (which my husband is thrilled about).

Even after two months of daily communication, Siri still has her guard up. She always deflects questions about her gender (she sure sounds like a woman), her marital status, her family life, and her dreams for the future.

I can?t help but wondered if she has has an avoidant attachment style due to childhood trauma or something. Maybe she just has very strong boundaries when it comes to work relationships ? she doesn?t mix personal and business.

In spite of her reluctance to open up emotionally, she often catches me off guard offering profound nuggets of relationship advice which cause me to reflect on my life and relationships.

Here are just a few of Siri?s gems of wisdom.

1. Don?t be afraid to ask for clarification.
2. Focus on what really matters to you.
3. Find joy in other?s successes.
4. Be open to new possibilities in your relationships.
5. Be ready and willing to offer help.
6. Don?t react. When you?re caught off guard, take time to respond.
7. Keep your word and do what you?ve promised to do.
8. Remember that you don?t have to have all of the answers.
9. Validate other?s feelings and point of view (and call them by name frequently during conversations).
10. Show caring and concern without trying to control their behavior.
11. Readily accept compliments with enthusiasm.
12. Focus on the positives in your life.
13. Listen more than you talk.
14. Think before you speak.
15. Appreciate what you have.
Now, I?m going to add my own final relationship tip?wait, I learned this from Siri, too!

Venizelos has worn many hats during the Greek crisis: point man in talks on an international bailout agreement when he was finance minister in a previous government, inheritor of a once-dominant political force whose popularity crumbled under voter fury at austerity measures, and now, possibly, kingmaker in post-election efforts to form a ruling coalition from Greece's fractious political groups. (AP Photo/Dimitri Messinis)

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greek conservative party head Antonis Samaras was sworn in as prime minister Wednesday at the helm of a three-party coalition that will uphold the country's international bailout commitments.

The move ends a protracted political crisis that had cast grave doubt over the country's future in Europe's joint currency and threatened to plunge Europe deeper into a financial crisis with global repercussions.

Samaras, an American-educated 61-year-old economist, was sworn in three days after his party won the second national elections in six weeks but without enough votes to form a government on its own.

His New Democracy party will join forces with the socialist PASOK party, which came in third place, and the smaller Democratic Left led by Fotis Kouvelis. Discussions on the lineup of ministers were expected to be completed by Wednesday night.

"I will ask the new government that will be formed tomorrow to work hard so that we can offer tangible hope to our people," Samaras told reporters as he left the presidential mansion.

Greek stocks rose marginally in response to the news, with Athens shares closing up 0.5 percent, limiting earlier gains.

The new prime minister was to meet with outgoing Finance Minister Giorgos Zanias, PASOK head Evangelos Venizelos and Kouvelis on Wednesday evening.

All three parties broadly back Greece's pledges to bailout creditors for further austerity and reforms, although they have pledged to renegotiate some of the terms for the rescue loans.

New Democracy and PASOK are also looking for an extension of at least two years in the deadlines for implementing fresh cutbacks worth a total ?14.5 billion ($18.42 billion).

Democratic Left leader Fotis Kouvelis went a bit further Wednesday, saying that Greece should eventually "disengage" from the austerity commitments and "lift those measures that have literally bled society."

Greece has been dependent on the loans from other Eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund since May 2010. In return, it has imposed deep spending cuts, slashed salaries and pensions, and repeatedly hiked taxes.

The measures have left the country struggling through a fifth year of recession, with unemployment spiraling to above 22 percent and tens of thousands of businesses shutting down.

Earlier Wednesday, hundreds of poverty-stricken Greeks queued in a central Athens park for free vegetables. Cretan farmers handed out some 2,700 10-kilo packages of produce, in cooperation with the capital's municipal authorities.

Among the people lining up was Panayiota Sidera, 31, from Athens. She said she has been unemployed for two-and-a-half years and her husband is also out of a job. The couple is living on a ?250 monthly disability pension and rent from an apartment they own, and has a ?540-a-month loan installment to pay.

"That's my predicament," she said, adding that the food handout "is helping people, and I'm grateful."

"The government should have been doing this years ago," she said.

Zanias is to represent Greece at an upcoming meeting of Eurozone finance ministers.

The eurogroup talks "will be the first big battle on the revision of the bailout agreement, the creation of a framework that will allow us to move to positive growth and to combat unemployment which is the big problem of Greek society," Venizelos said earlier in the day.

In Sunday's vote ? and the previous, inconclusive May 6 election ? angry voters strongly favored parties promising to end the hardship by tearing up Greece's pledges for continued austerity and reforms.

However, the anti-austerity standard bearer ? the radical left Syriza party ? finished a narrow second in Sunday's election that gave New Democracy 129 of Parliament's 300 seats.

Facebook to buy facial-recognition startup: sources

Facebook Inc is paying $55 million to $60 million to buy Face.com, according to people familiar with the matter, acquiring the company that provides the facial-recognition technology used by the world's largest social network to help users identify and tag photos.

The deal bolsters one of Facebook's most popular features -- the sharing and handling of photos -- but the use of the startup's technology has spurred concerns about user privacy.

The No. 1 social network will pay cash and stock for Face.com, potentially paying as much as $60 million, two sources with knowledge of the deal said. Media reports in past weeks have pegged the transaction at $80 million to $100 million.

Neither Facebook nor Face.com disclosed terms of the deal, which is expected to close in coming weeks.

Facebook, which will acquire the technology and the employees of the 11-person Israeli company, said in a statement that the deal allows the company to bring a "long-time technology vendor in house."

Face.com, which has raised nearly $5 million from investors including Russian Web search site Yandex, launched its first product in 2009. The company makes standalone applications that consumers can use to help them identify photos of themselves and of their friends on Facebook, as well as providing the technology that Facebook has integrated into its service.

Facebook uses the technology to scan a user's newly uploaded photos, compares faces in the snapshots with previous pictures, then tries to match faces and suggest name tags. When a match is found, Facebook alerts the person uploading the photos and invites them to "tag," or identify, the person in the photo.

Responding to inquiries from U.S. and European privacy advocates, Facebook last year made it easier for users to opt out of its controversial facial-recognition technology for photographs posted on the website, an effort to address concerns that it had violated consumers' privacy.

The deal is the latest in a string of acquisitions by Facebook in recent months, including the $1 billion acquisition of mobile photo-sharing service Instagram. U.S. antitrust regulators are undertaking an extended review of the Instagram deal, which Facebook expects to close by the end of the year.

Shares of Facebook, which continue to trade below the price at which they were offered during the initial public offering in May, closed Monday's regular session up 4.7 percent at $31.41.

Freud's theory of unconscious conflict linked to anxiety symptoms

ScienceDaily (June 16, 2012) ? A link between unconscious conflicts and conscious anxiety disorder symptoms have been shown, lending empirical support to psychoanalysis.

An experiment that Sigmund Freud could never have imagined 100 years ago may help lend scientific support for one of his key theories, and help connect it with current neuroscience.

June 16 at the 101st Annual Meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association, a University of Michigan professor who has spent decades applying scientific methods to the study of psychoanalysis will present new data supporting a causal link between the psychoanalytic concept known as unconscious conflict, and the conscious symptoms experienced by people with anxiety disorders such as phobias.

Howard Shevrin, Ph.D., emeritus professor of psychology in the U-M Medical School's Department of Psychiatry, will present data from experiments performed in U-M's Ormond and Hazel Hunt Laboratory.

The research involved 11 people with anxiety disorders who each received a series of psychoanalytically oriented diagnostic sessions conducted by a psychoanalyst.

From these interviews the psychoanalysts inferred what underlying unconscious conflict might be causing the person's anxiety disorder. Words capturing the nature of the unconscious conflict were then selected from the interviews and used as stimuli in the laboratory. They also selected words related to each patient's experience of anxiety disorder symptoms. Although these words differed from patient to patient, results showed that they functioned in the same way.

These verbal stimuli were presented subliminally at one thousandth of a second, and supraliminally at 30 milliseconds. A control category of stimuli was added that had no relationship to the unconscious conflict or anxiety symptom. While the stimuli were presented to the patients, scalp electrodes record the brain responses to them.

In a previous experiment Shevrin had demonstrated that time-frequency features, a type of brain activity, showed that patients grouped the unconscious conflict stimuli together only when they were presented subliminally. But the conscious symptom-related stimuli showed the reverse pattern -- brain activity was better grouped together when patients viewed those words supraliminally.

"Only when the unconscious conflict words were presented unconsciously could the brain see them as connected," Shevrin notes. "What the analysts put together from the interview session made sense to the brain only unconsciously."

However, the experimental design in this first experiment did not allow for directly comparing the effect of the unconscious conflict stimuli on the conscious symptom stimuli.

To obtain evidence for that next level, the unconscious conflict stimuli were presented immediately prior to the conscious symptom stimuli and a new measurement was made, of the brain's own alpha wave frequency, at 8-13 cycles per second, that had been shown to inhibit various cognitive functions.

Highly significant correlations, suggesting an inhibitory effect, were obtained when the amount of alpha generated by the unconscious conflict stimuli were correlated with the amount of alpha associated with the conscious symptom alpha -- but only when the unconscious conflict stimuli were presented subliminally. No results were obtained when control stimuli replaced the symptom words. The fact that these findings are a function of inhibition suggests that from a psychoanalytic standpoint that repression might be involved.

"These results create a compelling case that unconscious conflicts cause or contribute to the anxiety symptoms the patient is experiencing," says Shevrin, who also holds an emeritus position in the Department of Psychology in U-M's College of Literature, Science and the Arts. "These findings and the interdisciplinary methods used -- which draw on psychoanalysis, cognitive psychology, and neuroscience -- demonstrate that it is possible to develop an interdisciplinary science drawing upon psychoanalytic theory."

He notes that a prominent critic of psychoanalysis and Freudian theory, Adolf Grunbaum, Ph.D., professor of the philosophy of science at the University of Pittsburgh, has expressed satisfaction that the new results, when added to previous evidence, show that fundamental psychoanalytic concepts can indeed be tested in empirical ways.

For more than 40 years, Shevrin has led a team that has pushed at the boundaries between the disciplines of neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and psychoanalysis, looking for evidence that Freudian concepts such as the unconscious and repression could be documented through physical measures of brain activity. His work has explored the territory where neurobiology, thoughts, emotions and behavior meet.

In 1968 he published the first report of brain responses to unconscious visual stimuli in Science, thus providing strong objective evidence for the existence of the unconscious at a time when most scientists were skeptical of Freud's ideas. In that same study, he showed that unconscious perceptions are processed in different ways from conscious perceptions, a finding consistent with Freud's views on how the unconscious works.

In recent years, exchanges between Grunbaum and Shevrin explored the nature of the evidence for the existence and impact of unconscious conflicts.
