'Idol' unveils Top 24 with a twist

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? It's good news for 25 ? not just 24 ? singers on "American Idol."

After the "Hollywood Week" and Las Vegas performance rounds, "Idol" judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler narrowed the field from 42 contestants to 24 semifinalists on Wednesday's installment of the Fox singing competition, but they apparently cut too many.

At the end of the episode, "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest revealed in a voiceover that "the judges felt compelled to reinstate another guy." He teased that either Jermaine Jones, Johnny Keyser, Richie Law or David Leathers would be among the male semifinalists next week.

"You did a great job, and you got so far," Lopez told a weeping Jones after he was dismissed on a stage surrounded by bubbling water at the Wynn Las Vegas resort.

The semifinalists unveiled Wednesday were: Deandre Brackensick, 17, San Jose, Calif.; Adam Brock, 27, Washington, Pa.; Hollie Cavanaugh, 18, McKinney, Texas; Hallie Day, 24, Baltimore; Eben Franckewitz, 15, Loveland, Ohio; Skylar Laine, 18, Brandon, Miss.; Chase Likens, 21, Point Pleasant, W.W.; Shannon Magrane, 16, Tampa, Fla.; Aaron Marcellus, 27, Atlanta; and Jeremy Rosado, 19, Valrico, Fla.

The semifinalists announced Tuesday were: Baylie Brown, 22, Krum, Texas; Colton Dixon, 20, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; Reed Grimm, 26, Ellsworth, Wis.; Jen Hirsh, 25, Agoura Hills, Calif.; Haley Johnsen, 23, Beaverton, Ore.; Joshua Ledet, 19, Los Angeles; Phillip Phillips, 21, from Leesburg, Ga.; Jessica Sanchez, 16, San Diego; Chelsea Sorrell, 23, Stokesdale, N.C.; Elise Testone, 28, Charleston, S.C.; Erika Van Pelt, 26, South Kingstown, R.I.; and Creighton Fraker, 28, Heejun Han, 22, and Brielle Von Hugel, 17, New York.

The top 13 men will perform live next Tuesday, with the top 12 women taking the stage live Wednesday. Viewer votes will determine which singers will be eliminated Thursday.

Anthony Shadid, the Middle East correspondent for The New York Times who died Thursday of natural causes while on a reporting assignment in Syria, was, quite simply, the best.

The quality and depth of his reporting from across the region, particularly Iraq, was peerless, leaving the rest of us regional foreign correspondents stumbling in his wake in rueful admiration of his bravery, modesty, and innate talent. Perhaps part of that talent came from the fact that while he grew up in America, he was of Lebanese descent and thus had a cultural affinity with the region he was covering.

Although he began reporting from the region from 1995, first with the Associated Press in Cairo, then The Boston Globe and The Washington Post, it was in Iraq where he rightly achieved renown. Reading Anthony?s work, one sensed that he had an ability to shut himself off from the pressures of deadlines and the demands for instant analysis to take the time and thought to patiently locate, extract, and expose the soul of a story.

He did this with unforgettable and moving portraits of individual people attempting to cope with the rigors and fears of life in post-2003 Iraq. These elegantly written and nuanced reports, which became his trademark, offered a far more compelling and powerful insight into the realities of Iraq than the pedestrian daily accounts of the ebb and flow of the conflict.

His two Pulitzer Prizes for International Reporting, awarded in 2004 and 2010, were justly deserved.

A series of firsts

Anthony set a blistering pace in the competitive world of journalism. Even while he was busy racing between Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya to report on the startling developments of the Arab Spring, he still found time to scoop us all in his coverage of Syria. In May 2011, Anthony scored a fascinating and frank interview with Rami Makhlouf, Syria?s ?ber-oligarch and cousin and confidante of President Bashar al-Assad.

Mr. Makhlouf?s boast that the regime would fight to the end in a struggle that could turn into a sectarian war and destabilize the Middle East revealed the arrogance of power and also left embarrassed Syrian officials scrambling to downplay the impact of his words. Anthony had won an unprecedented invite from Makhlouf to Syria in response to his profile of the influential regime insider published in The New York Times days earlier.

Not content to land the first interview with Makhlouf in the Western media, Anthony returned to Syria days later, this time without an invite. He became the first foreign reporter to clandestinely slip into Syria, boldly riding a motorcycle across a remote stretch of Syria?s border with Lebanon to reach Homs, Syria?s third-largest city, which was just then beginning to bear the brunt of the regime?s crackdown.

Anthony was an extraordinarily brave journalist. In 2002, he was shot in the shoulder by an Israeli soldier while covering the Palestinian intifada in the West Bank. Last year, he was one of four New York Times reporters who were abducted for six days and threatened with death while covering the uprising in Libya ? an incident in which their driver almost certainly died.

Rumor had it last week that Christina Aguilera had already signed her contract to continue working as a judge for a third season, and now there's word that the rest of the gang — Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton — have all re-upped their deals as well.

According to TheWrap, all four judges re-signed with the show and will receive substantial salary increases for doing so. Aguilera will reportedly bank around $10 million, while Green, Levine and Shelton are expected to bring in $6 million.

The next step in moving forward with the third season will be to lock down a time slot and premiere date; NBC is expected to make a formal announcement very soon. Insider sources claim the show will be back in the fall to compete directly with Fox's "X Factor."

"The Voice" has proven to be a major hit for NBC. The season-two premiere following the Super Bowl on Sunday earned NBC's best ratings for an entertainment show in six years and after airing only three episodes, the singing competition has the highest averaging ratings on television.

No mentions or announcements have been made about the show's other on-air talent, host Carson Daly and new social-media correspondent Christina Milian, but given the current popularity of the show, we wouldn't expect NBC to shake things up the way Fox has with "X Factor," which lost judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones after its debut season.

'Foreign military in Syria raises ghost of Libya' ? RT

Reports of a foreign military presence aggravating the situation in Syria have prompted a prominent Duma member to issue a warning about a disastrous repeat of the military intervention in Libya.

Chairman of the State Duma International Affairs Committee Alexei Pushkov spoke out following reports that a ?foreign special task force? has been dispatched to Syria in an effort to provide assistance to the political opposition.

"According to the latest reports that are now being verified, a foreign special task force has been deployed in Syria,? Pushkov told reporters on Friday. ?If these reports are proved to be true, the scenario will be absolutely the same as it was in Libya.?

According to Pushkov, "they [the alleged foreign task force on the ground in Syria] are supporting the opposition and supplying them with arms; they propose an unbalanced resolution that places rigid conditions on Syria's ruling regime, while giving in to the demands of the opposition."

Neither Russia, nor China, nor many other countries want a repeat of the Libyan scenario, he added.

The comments by the State Duma official come as Russian lawmakers discuss a draft statement on Syria.

"The State Duma deputies support Russia?s official position?to facilitate the settlement of the conflict inside Syria," reads the draft, expected to be approved by the lower house's four factions.

Proposed by the International Affairs Committee, the draft says that the State Duma "deems it extremely important for the UN, specifically for the Security Council, not to side with any party in the conflict."

?Such an unbalanced approach?would undermine the chances for an equitable and constructive dialogue,? the document noted.

The draft statement went on to criticize the ?ultimatums issued to only one side of the conflict,? while, at the same time, calling for ?regime change? as a mandatory precondition for settling the unrest.

The Russian deputies say they condemn military intervention in the affairs of foreign countries and the imposition of solutions from outside.

"Russia will not support a single document that implies or allows such intervention without the UN Security Council's direct approval," the lawmakers said.

Pushkov warned against using ?humanitarian reasons? for justifying military intervention in foreign countries and turning the United Nations and the Security Council ?into an ally for one side of a civil conflict."

These activities are advanced by the help of western media, Pushkov believes, which promote a particular set of 'facts' that are impossible to prove. He called for a bigger presence of Russian media in the international arena in order to create greater transparency in news coverage.
