One dead in Phoenix office shooting

PHOENIX (AP) ? A gunman opened fire at a Phoenix office complex on Wednesday, killing one person, wounding two others and setting off a manhunt. Police warned the public that he was "armed and dangerous."

Authorities identified the suspect as Arthur D. Harmon, who they said opened fire at the end of a mediation session. They identified a man who died hours after the late morning shooting as 48-year-old Steve Singer.

Police said a 43-year-old man was listed in critical condition and a 32-year-old woman suffered non-life threatening injuries.

"We believe the two men were the targets. It was not a random shooting," said Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a Phoenix police spokesman.

Thompson said authorities believe Harmon acted alone and fled the scene in a car after the 10:30 a.m. shooting.

Harmon allegedly shot at someone who tried to follow him after the shooting in an attempt to get his license plate number, according to authorities.

Police didn't immediately release the names of the wounded. But a Phoenix law firm, Osborn Maledon, said one of its lawyers, Mark Hummels, was among the wounded. The firm said he "was representing a client in a mediation" when he was shot.

According to court documents, Harmon was scheduled to go to a law office in the same building where the shooting took place for a settlement conference in a lawsuit he filed last April against Scottsdale-based Fusion Contact Centers LLC, where Singer was the CEO.

The company had hired him to refurbish office cubicles at two call centers in California, but a contract dispute arose.

Fusion said Harmon was paid nearly $30,000 under the $47,000 contract. But the company asked him to repay much of the money when it discovered that the cubicles could not be refurbished, according to the documents.

Harmon argued Fusion hung him out to dry by telling him to remove and store 206 "worthless" work stations after the mix-up was discovered. Harmon said Fusion then told him that the company decided to use a competitor.

Harmon's lawsuit had sought payment for the remainder of the contract, $20,000 in damages and reimbursement for storage fees and legal costs.

Pro tempore Judge Ira Schwartz, who scheduled the meeting, did not immediately return an email seeking comment. A message left Wednesday at the home of Singer also wasn't immediately returned.

Hummels was representing Fusion in the lawsuit.

As police searched for the shooter, SWAT teams and two armored vehicles surrounded a home about 7 miles from the shooting scene. Police served a search warrant to enter the house, which county property records show was sold by Harmon to his son last year for $26,000.

For a time, officers used a megaphone to ask Harmon to surrender, believing he might be inside the home.

The gunfire at the office complex prompted terrified workers to lock the doors to their offices and hide far from the windows. SWAT officers searched the building.

"Everyone was just scared, honestly, just scared," said Navika Sood, assistant director of nursing at First at Home Health Services who along with her co-workers locked the entrances to their office.

Sood said police evacuated the office about 30 minutes after she first heard the popping noises.

The shooting took place on the same day that hearings on legislation to address gun violence were convened in Washington, with former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords testifying for stricter gun controls.

A gunman shot Giffords in the head during a shooting rampage in Tucson in January 2011.

Around 10:30 a.m., the gunman arrived at the office building and got into a dispute with someone, a conflict that escalated to the point where he drew a gun and shot three people, Thompson said.

Vanessa Brogan, who works in sales support at an insurance business in the three-story complex, said she heard a loud bang that she thought at first was from somebody working in or near the building.

She said others at the business thought they heard multiple loud noises. She said people locked themselves in offices until authorities evacuated the complex that houses insurance, medical and law offices.

Becky Neher, who works for a title company in the building, said the two gunshots she heard sounded like two pieces of metal banging against each other.

Watching from her second-story office, she saw people leaving the building.

"Someone yelled, 'We have a shooter,'" she said. She saw two victims lying on the ground outside the back side of the building. She said health care workers who have offices in the complex came out to help.

Don Jaksa, a software consultant who works in the building, said he was listening to the radio when he suddenly heard "two pops." He said he didn't think they were gunshots.

"My co-worker goes to the range all the time," he said. "He identified it as gunfire."

His co-worker then locked the door. After five minutes, they left and ran into police and someone carrying a stretcher. The police escorted them back to their office and told them to lock the door again.

They were eventually evacuated, and as he sat on a rock outside the complex, his wife called to make sure he was OK after seeing the shooting on the news.

Workers were later allowed to leave the building. Two hugged each other when they got outside.

"You don't expect this when you come to work," worker Lindsa Rincon said.

Working to identify early warning signs in juvenile offenders

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Red flags are easy to recognize in the days following a tragic event like a mass shooting. That's why a group of Iowa State researchers is working to identify those early warning signs in juvenile offenders before they turn into a pattern of criminal behavior.

It is often difficult for people to understand what leads to criminal behavior in children or teens. But by the time a juvenile is arrested, or referred to the juvenile court system, the child generally has displayed a pattern of antisocial behavior, said Matt DeLisi, professor of sociology at Iowa State University.

In some extreme cases, DeLisi said children as young as 5 years old are committing crimes. So when that child becomes an adult, he or she may already have a lengthy criminal record. That is why DeLisi, and the team of researchers, wants to understand what contributes to this behavior in order to correct it.

"With onset in criminal careers, the first sign of that problem behavior is an indicator of how severe it will be," DeLisi said. "If you can help them, you save a ton of money and you save a lot of problems. But it's just the issue of correctly identifying them and that raises a bunch of ethical and other issues."

The connection between the onset and the severity is similar to other ways children start to develop, whether it is positive or negative, at an early age.

"If you have someone who is 3, or even 2, and is already reading it would suggest that the person is highly intelligent," DeLisi said. "The reason is because the emergence or the onset of the behavior is usually inversely related to what they will become. The earlier something appears the more special they are or extreme."

With criminal behavior, the onset begins with rule violations, but researchers found a juvenile's first arrest or contact with the police is the strongest indicator of future problems. The study published in the Journal of Criminal Justice included 252 children living in Pennsylvania juvenile detention centers. The offenders ranged in age from 14-18 and on average had committed 15 delinquent acts in the prior year.

Researchers also discovered that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder got into trouble at a younger age than other juvenile offenders without ADHD. In fact, their first contact with police happened more than a year prior to other offenders. Youth with conduct disorder were also more likely to be arrested at a younger age. However, researchers urge caution on how the results are interpreted.

"This by no way means that every child with ADHD or conduct disorder will become delinquent or ultimately be arrested. What it does mean is that future work needs to address why some youth with ADHD or conduct disorder become delinquent and others do not," said Brenda Lohman, an associate professor in human development and family studies at Iowa State.

"From a preventive standpoint, this information could then help identify support systems and intervening mechanisms for families and parents, and ultimately decrease rates of antisocial behaviors of children with ADHD or conduct disorder," Lohman said.

In addition to preventive measures, researchers hope to build on this study to better understand the family dynamics that can lead to mental and behavioral issues in children.

"Extensive research indicates that economic hardship has an adverse effect on the well-being of families," said Tricia Neppl, an assistant professor in human development and family studies at Iowa State.

Economic pressures increase the risk for emotional distress, which Neppl said can lead to harsh disciplinary practices. She is working on a study to determine if such hardships, when a child is between the ages of 3 and 5 years old, impact the child's mental health when they are 6 to 13 years old.

"The results suggest that economic adversity influences parental emotional health, marital distress, and hostile parenting which predicts child mental health disorders, such as conduct disorder and ADHD, during later childhood and early adolescence," Neppl said.

As researchers understand more about the connection with antisocial behavior, DeLisi expects there will be an even greater push for intervention and treatment for ADHD and conduct disorder.

"Early interventions are very successful, but they require a lot of investment on the part of people who may be the least willing or able to invest," DeLisi said. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and Saint Louis University also contributed to the study.

Lopez athletics: football team undefeated, volleyball winning, soccer building experience

Contributed by Lopez School District superintendent?Bill Evans, special to the Sounder.

Lopez School is bent upon dispelling the myth that a small student enrollment is less likely to yield competitive athletic teams. With a K-12 enrollment of just over 200 students and 125 students 6-12, the athletic teams of Lopez School are doing very well. The number of students turning out for sports at Lopez continues to far exceed the state average, with approximately 80 percent of Lopez High School students participating in sports. The football team has 22 athletes turning out, grades 8-12. Volleyball is suiting up 16 athletes, and soccer boasts 23 athletes on the field. The Middle School teams are also experiencing a good turnout for fall sports.

The football team is undefeated, with an overall 6-0 season record. Racking up impressive numbers of total yards gained in the season, number of passes completed, number of pass interceptions, and 298 total points (at press time), the football team is very likely to be in post-season play. Coached by Larry Berg, Nate Borg and Aaron Dye, the football players have also exhibited exceptional sportsmanship, for which many of their opponents have shared their appreciation. The Lopez Lobos are proud of their WIAA/Seattle Times State Class 1-B Athlete of the Week, Tommy Kramer. The Lobos last home game is on Oct. 29 against Evergreen Lutheran.

The Lopez soccer team continues to give it their all. Fans and coaches are considering this a building year and the athletes are enthusiastically racking up valuable playing time and on-the-field experience. A young, coed team, the soccer athletes are facing teams with more experience and often all-male rosters. Opposing teams have remarked on the soccer team?s enthusiasm and fair sportsmanship. The Lobo soccer athletes are coached by Melanie Weber and Ali Nicole, and play their last home game on October 20.

The volleyball team is coached by returning David (Chico) Chicovsky, and Isabelle Tetu. They are having a winning season, with 11 wins, and 1 loss, and are undefeated in league play. The Lady Lobos are an aggressive team with statistics that are impressive. Also receiving accolades for fair-play and sportsmanship, the volleyball team has qualified for post-season play. Many of their fans are also booking motel rooms for state in Yakima.

With winter sports just around the corner it looks to be a great year for Lobo sports. High school boys basketball will be coached by M.R. Buffum. High school girls basketball will be coached by Larry Berg. The school will be running a full winter athletic program and is planning on a big turnout for winter sports. The district invites fans to check the district website for schedules of games.

?We are proud of our athletes, very appreciative of our coaches, and very pleased that we are able to continue to offer a full athletic program to our students and community?, said Lopez Principal Lisa Shelby.

Iran?s space monkey launch does not pose military threat, say experts

sciencerecorder.com
January 30, 2013

Iran has reached a milestone goal in its quest to send human astronauts into space, by successfully launching a monkey into orbit and returning it safely to the Earth.

Iranian state television reported Monday that a rocket named Pishgam, meaning Pioneer in Farsi, traveled straight upward into the thermosphere to reach a height of 75 miles before returning to the planet?s surface. Hamid Fazeli, the director of the Iran Space Agency, said that ?because of biological similarities between humans and monkeys, the latter were selected for the space mission.? He went on to predict that Iran would possess the capabilities to send a human into space within the ?next five to eight years.?

Last year Tehran announced plans to build a new space center, following the reported launch of a mouse, turtle, and worms into space in 2010 on the back of an Explorer rocket. While security officials in the United States and Europe worry that Iran?s swiftly-developing space technology could serve a dual purpose of sending nuclear warheads aboard long-range missiles, experts said the recent experiment does not appear to have military implications.

Heather Gould, Mathematics Education, Ph. D. - Teachers College

Heather Gould

Heather Gould is a fourth-year Ph. D. student in the Mathematics Education program. She grew up in Stone Ridge, a small town in Ulster County, New York. She attended the University at Albany ? SUNY and earned a bachelor?s degree with a double major in mathematics and anthropology. She also earned two master?s degrees from SUNY Albany, one in mathematics and the other in curriculum development and instructional technology.

Soon after, she started working on a research project entitled ?National Study of Writing Instruction? at SUNY Albany, where she was a research assistant and mathematics adviser.? She tutored at SUNY Ulster in their mathematics lab and taught college courses at SUNY Ulster, Dutchess Community College, and Hudson Valley Community College.

She then continued her academic career by attending TC. The faculty in the mathematics education program at TC have a range of expertise and Heather knew that, wherever her studies led her, she would have a faculty member to guide her. This and the location of TC in New York City, where she has always wanted to live, were the major contributing factors to Heather attending TC.

Heather has been offered various opportunities to work with faculty in the mathematics program at TC. Professor Vogeli emphasizes student publications, and Heather recalls, ?every time he offered me an opportunity to publish or gave me an idea to publish I tried to do so.? In addition to support with publication endeavors, she has been able to work with faculty to continue to do research in mathematics education.

Heather is beginning her fourth year of doctoral studies in mathematics education. She has written the first few chapters of her dissertation and has begun to collect data. She states, ?my first couple of chapters are decent works, the literature review is never done ? I am currently collecting data.?

Heather began with the intent of studying mathematics language acquisition but her knowledge of the current needs in mathematics education research has grown and with it, her interests have evolved. She is currently studying how teachers understand mathematical modeling, particularly with reference to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. ?With the introduction of Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, new emphasis has been placed on mathematical modeling. Unfortunately very few teachers seem to have a complete grasp of what mathematical modeling is?. That?s not a knock on teachers. That?s just the state of what has been taught before and what has not been taught,? she says.
Her academic interests outside of those she researches are mathematics manipulatives, mathematical language acquisition, and ethnomathematics (the study of how different cultures perceive mathematics).

Heather was the chair of the editorial board for the Teachers College Mathematical Modeling Handbook, which is a Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP) publication. The handbook was written and completed within the Mathematics Education program as a response to the release of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and its call for mathematical modeling. This was the beginning of her interest in mathematical modeling. She believes this has been the largest project that she has been involved with at TC.

She was given the opportunity to be a teaching assistant for both Professors Pollak and Professor Garrity. While assisting Dr. Garrity, she worked with pre-service and in-service elementary teachers, addressing the development of their mathematical content knowledge. Heather was able to learn more about teaching elementary mathematics, how elementary teachers understand mathematics, their difficulties with the subject, and what can be done to address those difficulties.

Heather is currently co-teaching an experimental mathematical modeling workshop with Dr. Pollak. The focus of the course is twofold: for the participants, it is to learn about mathematical modeling, with a particular emphasis on the process of modeling; for her and Dr. Pollak, the purpose is to see how teachers react to mathematical modeling and how teachers feel after completing mathematical modeling activities, with particular emphasis on the activities found within the COMAP handbook. The general goal is for the participants to feel comfortable teaching mathematical modeling and to learn how to teach mathematical modeling better. ?The great thing about teaching teachers is that they are always able to give you good criticism about what you can do better, so they in turn learn better,? Heather says.

Heather recently completed an exciting mathematics course with the Summer Institute for the Gifted After School program, teaching sports statistics to 6th ? 8th grade gifted students. She developed an investigative, real-world curriculum in which students were given the opportunity to develop their very own statistic for the sport of their choice. Gifted students from all over the city chose to participate in the course. At the end of the course, the students presented their statistical work to their parents giving oral reports. The parents were very pleased by the work that their children had completed within this program and they showed their admiration at the end of the presentations with roaring applause. This was a heart-warming experience for Heather and she hopes to teach in this program again in the future.

Heather was the editor for the Spring-Summer 2012 issue of the Mathematics Education program journal, the Journal of Mathematics Education at Teachers College. Each issue has a special focus theme, with assessment being the theme of the Spring-Summer 2012 issue. In addition to that, she has played a small role as an adviser for the Teachers College Handbook on Mathematical Modeling Assessment that will be published by COMAP in the near future.

Over the summer, Professor Walker offered Heather the opportunity to work as a curriculum developer on an interdisciplinary curriculum project entitled Understanding Fiscal Responsibility. The project includes lessons in mathematics, economics, civics, history, and government. She helped to develop and write some of the mathematics lessons intended to help students understand and look critically at the federal budget and national debt.

After completing her degree, Heather hopes to continue her research as a professor of mathematics or mathematics education and to provide professional development for teachers on mathematical modeling. She states, ?I haven?t taught college classes in a while and I miss it.?

She is an active member of National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), attends conferences regularly, and has published in NCTM?s elementary education journal, Teaching Children Mathematics.

Aside from her busy academic schedule, Heather enjoys spending time with her fianc? and her two pets. She is also an avid fan of baseball and the New York Mets, in particular; she watches most games and attends them when she is able. Heather enjoys building with LEGO bricks and would eventually like to own an educational toy store.

Jane Austen tourism booms as 'Pride and Prejudice' turns 200

9 hrs.

When a classic love story has a big birthday, it?s time to have a ball ? literally.

Monday marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the Jane Austen novel that introduced feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet, seemingly aloof Mr. Darcy and a world of manor homes and grand estates that turned England into a dream destination for readers around the globe.

Balls, dances and other special events are taking place this year to celebrate the bicentennial as Austen continues to lure travelers.

?She?s hugely important,? said Meredith Pearson, a spokeswoman for VisitBritain. The country?s national tourism agency maintains a guide for fans eager to experience the "Pride and Prejudice" lifestyle.

?We found that, to this day, because of the popularity of those stories, it?s something that visitors really, really enjoy doing,? Pearson said.

Even if you haven?t read the book, chances are you?re familiar with the plot of ?Pride and Prejudice? after catching the recent film version starring Keira Knightley, seeing ?Bridget Jones? Diary????a modern reboot of the novel ? or watching the blockbuster 1995 BBC mini-series starring Colin Firth, which led to a huge surge in visitors, Pearson noted.

No wonder, then, tourism is booming along Austen?s trail in England, a path that traditionally takes visitors to the resort city of Bath, the verdant landscapes of Derbyshire and the village of Chawton.

The author lived in Bath from 1801 to 1806 and chose the city as the setting for two of her novels. Today, about 60,000 people a year flock to The Jane Austen Centre, which chronicles her Bath experience, said Jennie Rogers, general manager of the attraction.

Besides taking in the Centre?s permanent exhibition and sampling Georgian biscuits, visitors can also try on fashions from Austen?s era ? empire-waist dresses, bonnets, gloves and parasols for the ladies; waistcoats, coats and top hats for the gentlemen.

?Our visitors become overwhelmed when trying on our replica costumes,? Rogers said. ?(They) love the romance of Jane's novels and the way in which they can relate to her character's dilemmas and issues???even today.?

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the Centre is hosting an ?International Readathon? on Monday, when dozens of actors, authors and Austen experts will read the book aloud in its entirety during a 12-hour period.

The city of Bath has put together a suggested itinerary for Austen fans, including taking a walk along the Royal Crescent, where the author often strolled, and enjoying afternoon tea in The Pump Room, which was a popular gathering spot during Austen?s era.

If you?d like to dress up and party Austen-style, there?s the Jane Austen Festival Regency Costumed Summer Ball on June 22, which features Regency dancing???the intricate choreography that requires ladies and gentlemen to form lines and circles, and twirl around and bow to each other.

?We hope to dance Mr. Beveridge's Maggot???a dance made popular by the BBC 1995 version of ?Pride and Prejudice,?? said organizer Jackie Herring.

The novel is also the theme of this year?s Bath Jane Austen Festival, scheduled to take place Sept. 13-21, complete with a Mr. Darcy lookalike contest, a masked ball and workshops on how to perfect the Regency look.

Fans who want to stroll through grand estates and gardens featured in the novels should head to the Derbyshire region of England where many of the Austen movies and mini-series were filmed. The district maintains a list of all the locations used in the productions.

Pearson thinks U.S. visitors love the sites because they?re so uniquely British.

?It?s part of that fairly tale, in a way. Because (the U.S. is) such a young country comparatively, the fact that there are these gorgeous old manor houses and country houses ? it really takes people away and it really catches Americans? imagination,? Pearson said.

One such home is Chatsworth House, said to have inspired Pemberley, Mr. Darcy?s estate in ?Pride and Prejudice.?

To see where Austen created some of her characters, visit her former home in Chawton, now transformed into Jane Austen?s House Museum.

This is where the author spent the last eight years of her life and wrote ?Mansfield Park,? ?Emma,? and ?Persuasion.? To celebrate the 200th anniversary of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the museum is displaying first editions of the book, original illustrations and the table where Austen worked.

British tourism officials?? who are still giddy about the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee and all the other events that drew visitors to the region last year???are hoping Austen?s legacy will continue the momentum in 2013.

?It?s a great year to come over and experience all of the literary connections in the UK,? Pearson said.

(AP) ? Unlike several players at the Super Bowl, Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed agrees with President Obama that football needs to be made safer. Reed wants to be part of the solution, too.

The 11-year veteran and one of the most respected players in the NFL said Monday at the Super Bowl that Obama's comments questioning the safety of the game are on target. Reed added he'd like to be someone "to help work it out."

"I am with Obama," Reed said after learning of the president's concerns about parents allowing their sons to play football. "I have a son. I am not forcing football on my son. If he wants to play it ... I can't make decisions for him. All I can do is say, 'Son, I played it so you don't have to.' "

Reed, a nine-time Pro Bowler, believes football's medical system is broken.

"We've got some leaks in it that need to be worked out," he said. "Every medical training room should be upgraded; training rooms can be a lot better.

"When you've got the president talking about it, you got something."

Reed's opinion was far from the majority among Ravens and San Francisco 49ers asked about Obama's comments as they prepared for Sunday's Super Bowl. Teammate Joe Flacco said no one forced football on him or anyone else in the NFL.

"This is something we chose to do," the quarterback said. "When you talk about little kids doing it, they are not having the collisions we have in the NFL."

49eres All-Pro linebacker Aldon Smith was among several San Francisco players who doesn't see anything wrong with their kids playing football.

"It's not like we signed up and thought we were going to play tennis," Smith said. "It's a physical game. Everybody plays hard. And guys get hit sometimes. That's what we all know coming into the game. We all signed up for it.

"We came out to play football."

Guard Alex Boone was adamant that football has to be "physical," while adding he believed the league and the players association were attempting to make the game safer.

"If he wants to play, he can play. He can do whatever he wants," Boone said of having a son pursue footballs. "With little kids, you don't really have to worry about them that much. But as you get older, you have to understand the game better.

"I think the NFL is doing a great job with that right now with the little kids, try to teach them now, young, so that they understand. But, it's just football. It's going to be physical."

While acknowledging he's a football fan, Obama told The New Republic he's concerned about the violent nature of the sport ? enough so that if he had a son, he'd think twice about allowing him to play.

"I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence," he said.

"In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won't have to examine our consciences quite as much."

49ers cornerback Tarell Brown called football "a dangerous sport," but not one he would dissuade anyone from trying.

"I can understand what President Obama is saying, but at the same time, the league is putting in things (for safety)," Brown said. "It is a physical game if you are passionate about it and are trained the right way."

But Reed isn't sure everyone is being trained properly, or cared for adequately.

"I felt like I played the game as safe as possible," he said. "I even tell the guys that they have to take care of their bodies, take care of themselves. If you take care of that, it will take care of you."

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh joked about allowing his son Jack, now 4 months old, to follow in his footsteps; Harbaugh was an NFL quarterback for 14 seasons.

"If President Obama feels that way, then (there will) be a little less competition for Jack Harbaugh when he gets older," said Harbaugh, whose older brother John coaches the Niners' opponent, the Baltimore Ravens. "That's the first thing that jumps into my mind, if other parents are thinking that way."

Using Self Improvement To Improve Your Mind, Body And Mood ...

Monday, January 28th, 2013. Author : Max Cohen. 18 views.

Sometimes when you first step onto the road of personal development, it can all be a little overwhelming. There are also a lot of different improvement avenues to chose from. Personal development can range from improving your diet to enhancing your social skills. Self improvement can be achieved in many different ways. The main goal of personal development is to improve the way that you feel about yourself, but it is quite probable that others around you will notice the changes too.

Set realistic, attainable goals for yourself to ensure that you are envisioning an achievable, healthy lifestyle. By taking some time our for yourself to focus on both strengths and weaknesses, you will notice overall self-improvement.

Take the time to research the lives of successful people. Studying the processes used by others will help you better develop your own self improvement strategies. Knowing that other people have succeeded at the same goal will make it seem more attainable to you.

Be on the lookout for new ways to challenge yourself. Discovering new challenges is a great way to open yourself up to new possibilities. You can learn more and acquire new skills. You may even start a new model by doing something that has never been done before. Do something new and unique, instead of copying others.

TIP! Seeking advice from a counselor, or paster can be a wonderful source to help guide you. They have a great deal of experience in dealing with personal thoughts and are even licensed to do so.

When you are actively trying to improve yourself, failing to do well at something can hurt your self-esteem more than it otherwise would. Actually, failure is really a learning experience. Failure is a way of learning your weaknesses and your strengths. Looking at it this way, failure is a source of pride, because you?ve unlocked another piece of the puzzle when it comes to your development.

Get organized. You will feel accomplished and your mind will feel clearer. This also helps relieve you from stress caused by disorganization. When everything is in a proper place, life is a bit more calm.

Take the time to change the focus of your conversation from your own accomplishments and awards to the achievements of those around you. You?ll be able to find out about the wonderful things the people you know have accomplished, bringing about a new-found respect and admiration for them.

Find texts that help you. This could be a holy text for some people. For others, it could just a book of inspirational sayings. Sometimes having a physical representation of comfort can help you better manage your day-to-day life.

TIP! Make the most of your work time to accomplish more. One trick to doing this, is to take more breaks.

Improving your life is closely tied to willpower, and a lot can be said for the karma you develop along the way. This means that you are wise to only wish good things upon others. If you endeavor to be positive about all things, then that positivity will come back to you.

Learn to deal with stressful situations without reacting in an emotional way. Learning ways to maintain your composure when stressed will help boost your self-esteem, and help you triumph under any circumstance. Breathing deeply can be a powerful way to reduce stress and stay in the moment.

The worst way to deal with a situation is by overreacting. This will cause you unneeded and unnecessary stress. It?s best to train yourself to cope with your daily stress, and it begins with analyzing every situation where you tend to feel strained. If you screw up, you can probably fix it, or at least find a way to minimize the damage. Rather than dwelling on what you?ve lost, look at the things you still have.

Leadership is about exercising authority, but good leaders are humble, too. When delivering criticisms, remember that you should be firm, yet friendly. You will not go far if you forget your own willingness to serve. A successful leader is one who demonstrates integrity and virtue as an example to others.

TIP! Writing out your goals will help you develop your own plan for personal growth. Record the behaviors and character traits you wish to have; for example, you might list patience or gratitude.

It is impossible for you to properly care for the ones you love, unless you take care of yourself first. It doesn?t matter if you are succeeding or failing in your path. You should always find time to rest your body so that you can renew yourself.

Strive to improve daily so that each one is more perfect than the previous. Set a goal of continuous improvement through steady efforts. Try your hardest to achieve something different today than what you achieved yesterday.

Make a list of your priorities, and plan your life around these elements. When it comes to focusing your feelings and emotions, strive to apply them to the important aspects of your life that build happiness, and do not waste them on the negative aspects that weigh you down and prevent inner peace.

Your core principles are important, and your actions should reflect them. Everyone has basic principles by which they define themselves. Having a good foundation based on your core principles will benefit your sense of self esteem. Better yet, this practice encourages consistency, which is an excellent character trait to maintain.

TIP! Live your life with wisdom and humility. There are certain things in your life that you just can?t change.

Anytime and anywhere, be ready for when your ideas strike. Make sure you have a notepad on you at all times. Scribble detailed notes when something comes to you, and then carry them out whenever your creativity is piqued.

It is essential to have a clearly outlined goal, when working toward improving self improvement. Make sure to come up with a target goal for yourself. If you are clear about your goals, it will be easier to measure how well you have achieved them.

Our goal in this article was to help you to accomplish a start on your self improvement plans. However, there are many other ways in which you may further improve your life. No matter your age, you can always work on becoming a better person for both yourself and others.

Maintaining a positive attitude will get you through a lot of tough times while allowing you to grow and mature. If you do not have a good attitude you will never get as far as you could have. Maintain a positive approach to life in order to reach your goals.

TIP! One new trait that is being researched and is very important to develop is known as sexual capitol. It does not refer to using sexuality in a manipulative way.

Home prices see best yearly gain since 2006

By Leah Schnurr

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Home prices rose in November to rack up their best yearly gain since the housing crisis began, a further sign that the sector is on the mend.

But data on consumer confidence on Tuesday was less encouraging, with moods falling to their lowest level in more than a year as Americans became more pessimistic about the economic outlook and their financial prospects in the wake of higher taxes for many.

The S&P/Case Shiller composite index of 20 metropolitan areas gained 0.6 percent in November on a seasonally adjusted basis, in line with economists' forecasts.

Prices in the 20 cities rose 5.5 percent year over year, making for the strongest yearly price increase since August 2006 when prices were on their way down.

The housing market became a bright spot for the economy last year as prices rose and inventory tightened. The sector is expected to contribute to economic growth in 2013.

"What we're seeing is really a gradual improvement in the overall economy," said Anthony Chan, chief economist for Chase Private Client in New York.

Rising home prices and recent gains in the stock market should blunt the impact of tax increases for consumers and spending should improve by the second half of the year, said Chan.

Homebuyers also have been enticed by historically low interest rates. The Federal Reserve's latest stimulus efforts are helping to keep rates low, as the central bank buys assets including mortgage-backed securities.

The Fed meets on Tuesday for the first session of a two-day meeting, with a statement due on Wednesday.

It was the 10th month in a row that prices have increased, the longest string of gains since before 2006. Last year's rise in prices beat a nine-month consecutive run in 2009 and 2010, when the market was boosted by a homebuyer tax credit.

A number of challenges remain for the housing market, including tight access to mortgages and on-going foreclosures.

Highlighting the hurdles on the path to recovery, separate government data showed the homeownership rate slipped to 65.4 percent in the fourth quarter from 65.5 percent.

Consumer attitudes dropped more than expected to 58.6 in January, data from The Conference Board showed. It was the lowest level since November 2011.

At the start of the year, U.S. politicians came to an agreement that averted the so-called fiscal cliff of spending cuts and tax increases that had been set to come into effect.

But the deal did raise taxes for many Americans, while a payroll tax holiday came to an end. Lawmakers still face a number of budget decisions.

"Consumers are probably pretty unhappy to notice that their payroll taxes have gone up," said David Sloan, economist at 4Cast Ltd in New York.

U.S. stocks pared slight gains immediately after the report was released, but Wall Street was modestly higher by midday.

The Conference Board's consumer expectations index tumbled to its lowest level since October 2011 at 59.5, while the present situation measure slipped to 57.3.

Consumers' views on the labor market were also weaker, with the "jobs hard to get" index rising for the first time since September.

Economists said the pain should be short lived and that confidence was likely to perk back up as long as Washington can come to an agreement on the budget issues yet to be resolved.

"This might bounce back pretty quickly as people get used to a smaller paycheck. Right now, it's a sticker shock," said Craig Dismuke, chief economic strategist at Vining Sparks in Memphis, Tennessee.

Home prices on a non-adjusted basis slipped 0.1 percent. The non-adjusted numbers showed prices fell in about half of the cities covered by the survey, with the winter months typically a weak period for housing, the survey said.

Phoenix, which saw its housing market rebound sharply last year, led with the biggest yearly gain at 22.8 percent. New York was the only city to fall, down 1.2 percent from the previous year.

You Amplified - Empower Network

TIP! It is almost impossible to have a happy, healthy mind when your body has been neglected entirely. Partake in regular exercise and stick to a nutritious diet.

It is possible to be rudely awakened by the threat of losing loved ones. In order to improve your personal life, you now have to improve your personal development. Where, though, do you begin? There are some fantastic suggestions in this article to help you begin.

TIP! Individuals who are dealing with severe problems may benefit from regular therapy. Books that teach self help are helpful, but do not contain the one-on-one personal touch you can get from a therapist.

Are you having trouble meeting someone that you can love and call your own? Use the net to jump start your search. Amazingly, meeting online is now how 40% of couples begin their relationship. Your special someone could be looking for you right now. Both have their benefits and their downfalls.

TIP! To develop as a human being, it is important to know what your ambitions and goals are. Changing your perspective about the future is all about your view on it.

The goals that you have set in your personal development plan should be clearly defined to show the steps toward achievement of success. With specific goals, chances are you?ll do the things that need to be done to accomplish them. Doing so will allow you to realize success more quickly and meet all challenges.

TIP! Pinpoint exactly what is blocking your progress. This can prove problematic for most folks.

Head to a movie with your best friend if anxiety is a problem in your life. Movies are social settings, but they do not require conversation or uncomfortable socialization. It will also help you learn to feel comfortable and secure around large groups of people.

TIP! Get rid of unneeded stress in your life. To avoid stress, try to remain calm when something unexpected happens.

Find out more abut sexual capitol and how you can develop it. This has nothing to do with using sex appeal to get the things you covet. It has more to do with charm. Good social skills, including a command of sexual capital, are not absolutely required, but they can take you further than you would get without them.

TIP! Personal development begins with becoming a leader. Most people believe that leadership and influence are synonymous.

Self-discipline is a key element of any personal development program. Make sure that you develop self control skills. Try and curb your desires to overindulge on harmful items. When you take control of these desires you life will be a richer and healthier one.

TIP! Perhaps stress is keeping you from feeling happy. Being subjected to sustained and extreme stress can have negative mental and physical repercussions.

It?s a good personal guideline to treat everyone with respect even if they don?t necessarily have anything you might need from them. The treatment you show them is not a reflection of their character but of yours.

TIP! Live your life with wisdom and humility. Learn from situations you encounter every day, and make sure that you recognize what you cannot change about circumstances in your life.

Failure can be devastating to one?s ego when one is trying to better oneself through self improvement. Actually, failure is really a learning experience. It shows you what your strengths and your weaknesses are. Every thing you fail at, you should be proud of, it is just another part of you!

TIP! It is senseless to allow yourself to be consumed with worries. When you worry, you create a made-up situation inside of your mind that hasn?t yet happened, and in all likelihood, probably never will.

You can learn how to handle difficult problems without over-reacting. If you learn how to keep a good head when you are in a stressful situation, you can get the confidence in order to succeed in anything you do! Whenever a stressful situation strikes, breathe deeply and feel your body relax.

TIP! Personal development begins when you identify what you value the most. Value your personal best and make that important to your life.

Stay humble. Humans are just a very small bit of the universe. No one knows everything, and everyone has more to learn from others. Understand this and open yourself up to new opportunities. When you approach situations with an open mind, you will see how much you can learn from others.

TIP! Choose one of your most important aspects that you want to improve, and put your focus there. There may be several aspects of your life that you want to improve, but if you limit your attention to one thing at a time, your chance for success improves.

If you like to talk a lot, you might have heard that you need to zip those lips and listen more. This is particularly true if you want to improve yourself. Ensure you are taking time to listen to yourself. Hearing your own thoughts and feelings when you express them will lead to a better understanding of what you need to improve your life.

TIP! Exercising should be part of everyone?s life, not just those who are looking to lose weight. There are a variety of great reasons to exercise.

Good health is the cornerstone of personal development. In order to maintain a healthy body, you have to stay motivated to practice healthy eating habits and exercise. If you make your health the priority, you will likely feel your best, which makes contributing to the different aspects of life easier.

TIP! Instead of bragging abut your achievements and awards, ask other people about what they have accomplished that they are most proud of. You will then find out things that others have done to accomplish their goals, and you will get some insight.

Look for different sources of encouragement, like books. Some people see it spiritually, whereas others just find it inspirationally. Keeping something on hand that you can revisit when necessary is a great way to improve your mindset, and navigate such situations more effectively.

TIP! Many employers are not as concerned with the name of your school as they are with the fact that you had the discipline and determination to finish the work and graduate! This shows that you will be a dedicated, hard worker. Finance jobs are one of the few exceptions, as your school will matter a great deal.

As this article indicates, a self improvement plan requires a lot of time, effort and dedication. Plan everything carefully, and do your research before you start working toward a new goal. The tips you have read will guide you in the right direction for the beginning of your personal development journey.

Jay Ratliff blood alcohol level was twice legal limit - Should Dallas ...

jay-ratliff-blood-alcohol-dallas-cowboys-gi.jpgPolice say Dallas Cowboys' Jay Ratliff had a blood-alcohol level of .16 when his vehicle collided with an 18-wheeler truck, causing it to flip over. The legal blood-alcohol limit in Texas is .08.

Ratliff was arrested at the scene of the crash in the Dallas suburb of Grapevine, Tex. on suspicion of drunk driving, and subsequently released on $500 bail. Since Ratliff refused to submit to a breathalyzer test, his blood was drawn at the Grapevine municipal jail, Reuters reports.

What's truly tragic is this is the second DUI incident for the nose tackle position on the Dallas Cowboys this season. Josh Brent, who was starting in place of the injured Ratliff, currently faces manslaughter charges in the death of teammate Jerry Brown after wrecking his own vehicle, resulting in Brown's death, on the same highway where Ratliff was arrested.

Sounds like someone needs to do an intervention in the Cowboys' locker room. Hello ... Are you listening, Jerry Jones?

?The next generation email marketing platform is mobile ...

Kalpit Jain

Email marketing is becoming one of the most effective ways of promotion and client retention. In an exclusive interaction, Kalpit Jain, COO, Netcore, tells Sohini Bagchi of CXOtoday why email marketing is becoming a powerful medium for businesses to connect and engage customers and what leads to its success.

What are the key trends you are observing in the e-mail marketing space?
Email marketing has evolved over the past couple of years, however it is only recently that this form of marketing is been understood as a marketing tool ? both by companies and their customers. The phenomenal growth of mobile devices is currently helping in the growth and development of mobile internet and this is a game changer. Today a good number of people are reading email on their smartphones and other mobile devices. The other trend is engagement. It is increasingly playing a greater role in email marketing making the tool more targeted and consolidated. In the past, email marketers sent bulk emails to customers resulting in spam emails that did not serve the purpose. Today a lot of attention is paid to analytics and customer intelligence. It has become essential to collect data about the existing and potential customers and to use the data for targeted, dynamic content as part of the entire email marketing program.

In India, which verticals are driving the adoption of email marketing? What are the challenges in the current scenario?
In India, the retail and e-commerce segment has shown maximum adoption in email marketing. With SMS costs going up, a lot more sectors especially, the SMB segment is heavily relying on this tool. Going forward, we will see more of targeted email marketing activities from the BFSI, hospitality, insurance and healthcare industries.
From an enterprise perspective, not understanding the tool well often becomes the biggest challenge for businesses. Marketers often deliver emails - a large portion of which gets delivered in the spam folder and from there to the trash bin. So, selecting the right mailing list is often a challenge as most firms do not conduct proper research and analytics before sending marketing emails. The level of engagement is often missing in email marketing. Contents are often boring and that does not inspire the audience to open the email, leave alone connecting to your message. Moreover, many believe that email marketing is a direct competitor to social media marketing which is wrong. Unless companies learn to use social media in conjunction with email marketing, a gap will always remain.

Today video email is turning out to a big thing. What are your thoughts about it?
Yes, video email is a hot trend today and attracts a lot of customers. However, it is still in the nascent stage in terms of growth and adoption. It can be powerful when used with the right set of audience and with the right content and graphics. It can in fact boost a company?s selling experience if the video is engaging, specific and meaningful as it is more like story telling. Video email however has a way to go to reach maturity.

What should companies keep in mind for conducting an effective email marketing campaign?
The most important point is to focus on the subscriber. There should be a careful and targeted list to send out each email. The message should be engaging, customized based to the audiences? need, demographics and sentiment. The email marketing message should be simple and relevant and integrated into social networking platforms. For example, the email should include links to your Facebook, LinkedIn profile and other social network sites. This will encourage subscribers to ?Like? and ?Share? by offering some call to action. It is also important to partner with a leading email marketing provider to ensure your email marketing campaign is a success. It is important to avoid high frequency, generic and HTML messages. Email on mobile devices has to be designed carefully with fewer links and images.

What is the Future of email marketing?
The next generation email marketing platform is mobile. With email marketing getting closer to mobile platform, the lines between mobile and email marketing are blurring. Email marketing will go through a lot of consolidation with the emergence of newer technologies in cloud, big data and mobility alongside greater data consumption. Analytics and BI will also play a major role in email marketing. There has to be a greater stability in telecom regulation as well. Flexible, open platforms can help content creators, aggregators and service providers to increase revenue share in this segment. As internet consumption through mobile or smartphones grow and companies find newer ways to engage customers, email marketing will witness a phenomenal change in the way it is adopted and consumed.

Human brain model and graphene win science's X Factor

What to do with a cool ?1 billion? How about "build a CERN for the brain"?

That's what Henry Markram, director of the Human Brain Project (HBP), intends to do now that the project has won one of two ?1 billion European research prizes, to be paid out over the next 10 years. The other winner is a project that aims to unlock the potential of supermaterial graphene.

The HBP is a quest to simulate a brain in a supercomputer. It is the successor to the Blue Brain Project, which kicked off in 2005 and succeeded in modelling the cortical column of a rat brain on a cellular level. According to a project spokesperson from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, the next stage is to move on to the human brain. This will involving "expanding in all directions" and making the models bigger and more detailed.

The hope is that the model, once built, will be used to identify biomarkers that could be used to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases, to test combinations of different drugs and to help build neuromorphic computers based on components found in the brain. Researchers from around the world will be able to use the simulation in a similar way to how astronomers would reserve observation time on a telescope.

Flexible conductor

The goal of the graphene project is to take advantage of the exotic properties of the one-atom-thick wonder material that won its creators the 2010 physics Nobel prize. Jari Kinaret of Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden, says that the flexible conductor will be used to make electronic paper, printed electronics and new kinds of personal communications devices such as those integrated into clothing.

Also on the to-do list are batteries for electric vehicles, lightweight medical implants made out of graphene nanocomposites and solar cells that take advantage of the material's ability to conduct light as well as electricity.

"The first products seen on market will be a golf club or tennis racket. This won't take 10 years," says Kinaret. "This was one of the strengths of our proposal ? there is low-hanging fruit as well as long-term goals."

Today's announcement of the winners is the culmination of a European Commission competition, dubbed science's X Factor, that started in 2010, when the EC put out a call for computing projects of a visionary scale. Each winner is supposed to receive ?1 billion over 10 years, half from the EC and half from European countries and private companies.

Four other projects made it through to the final round and most plan to continue with their proposals in some form. "We are exploring options," says Dirk Helbing, one of the directors of FuturICT, a project to build a real-time, global civilisation simulation. "The FuturICT idea will live on. It's more a question how big will Europe's piece of the cake be, that European scientists have baked."

Mercer Report mocks Apple share price, reverses BlackBerry's fortunes

Your daily dose of humor, courtesy of the Mercer Report . (Think something like Jon Stewart but with more u and eh.) It's easy to point out that Apple lost more money last week then several RIMs put together, but it's also undeniable that if you bought RIMM stock a while back, you'd be better off today than if you bought APPL stock.

And that should tell you just how totally insane the market is. Again,

Luxury homes in Japan with Sotheby's International Realty ? Real ...

The name Sotheby?s is well known as an auction house that dates back 270 years, but many people may not be aware that it is also a high-end real estate brokerage company. Established in 1976, Sotheby?s International Realty began by offering its auction clientele real estate services. It currently has over 600 offices located in 45 countries and territories, giving clients unprecedented access to properties that span the globe.

In 2010, Sotheby?s International Realty opened its Tokyo office in order to make a full-scale entry into the rapidly expanding Asian market. Its 15-strong team provides a full range of real estate services in Japanese, English, and Chinese.

Japan Today meets with Chief Operating Officer Yutaka Takeda at the company?s new office in Hiroo Plaza to hear more about the business.

What is your background?

I was actually born in Hiroo, not too far from this office. I went to Seikei University?the same university as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. His elder brother was my classmate. My major was economics. After graduating, I worked for JAL for 30 years, in sales, marketing, as well as the group?s hotel and resort business. I joined Sotheby?s in June 2010.

What is Sotheby?s International Realty?s history?

Many clients of the auction house are interested in high-end real estate, so Sotheby?s International Realty was founded in New York in 1976 to look after their needs. At first, the focus was mainly in Europe and the United States. In the 2000s, the company started pushing expansion in Asia and as a result, branches opened in Hong Kong and Japan three years ago, and Taiwan opened last year.

We have a very strong alliance with the auction house and one of our strengths is our reputable brand name and access to the world?s wealthy individuals. While some clients are auction clients, we do have our own client base, as well.

How were the last two years?

2011 was a very difficult year because of the earthquake and fear of radiation. Inbound business dropped off. However, after the March 11 disaster, some Japanese felt, probably for the first time in their life, that maybe they need a place to escape to if there is another disaster. That fuelled demand for real estate overseas. As a result, we saw good growth in the latter half of 2012.

Where are your Japanese clients looking to buy?

Hawaii is definitely No. 1. Singapore is very popular, also. For high-end Japanese clients, Europe is in demand ? Monaco, Switzerland, Paris. There is also interest in the Gold Coast in Australia and New Zealand. Our sales outside of Japan are heavily connected to whether there are direct flights to those destinations from Japan. But even if there isn?t a direct flight, our strength is our international network ? 600 offices in 45 countries. So we can help you with your real estate needs very quickly.

Who are your typical Japanese clients?

All ages, really, ranging from retirees to people in their 30s. Many of our clients buy real estate overseas for investment or they might go to stay there once or twice a year. Time share is a very big market for Japan. I would say that there are nearly 40,000 Japanese owners who have purchased Hilton and Marriot time-shares in Hawaii. That gives you some idea of how important a market Hawaii is.

What about your inbound business?

Many of our clients come from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore. There are some Americans or Europeans married to Japanese, who are interested in buying property in Tokyo. While the demand is mainly for Tokyo, we do receive some inquiries for residences in ski areas such as Hakone, Karuizawa and ski areas such as Hakuba and Niseko.

Where do you see growth potential?

We wish to boost our business of selling more to foreigners in Japan. That?s why we have recently moved to this new office in Hiroo. Many foreigners recognize the brand name and often drop in. Our office is open seven days a week and we want to be more in touch with the foreign community. We are like a concierge and our experienced staff speak Japanese, English and Chinese.

We have a close relationship with our clients. When they are in Tokyo, they often drop in and have lunch and talk about the market, real estate. I think that is one of our unique points.

How do you market the brand?

Our head office issues a publication called Reside twice a year. The auction house has a publication eight times a year and they have a real estate section. Hong Kong has a publication six times a year and does direct mail to 20,000 wealthy individuals. Japan?s properties are included in all those publications. Besides that, we have editorial tie-ups with a number of Japanese publications. We use YouTube and Facebook, as well as our website.

More proactively, we started holding Hawaiian real estate seminars in December 2011. It turned out to be a very big success and we have since held seminars in Osaka and Nagoya, usually once every six months. The last one, which was a collaboration with CNBC/Nikkei, drew 160 people. Most were serious clients.

How do you find properties?

We have a strong relationship with developers and construction companies, so we keep up to date on the market. We also have a team who specialize in looking for available properties. There is a saying in this business that many properties become available due to the 3 Ds ? death, divorce and debt.

What is a typical day for you?

I show up around 9 a.m. After tending to emails, we have meetings. I am more involved in cross-border transactions because I have good connections all over the world from my JAL days. I often have lunches and dinners with clients. That is an important part of the job. Sometimes I work on weekends, if I meet foreign visitors and show them properties.
